Ask a question: INSTANT ANSWERS

KIT CONTAINS: 6 TERMATROL BAIT STATIONS & 6 SUBTERFUGE CONTROL BAIT STICKS
Subterfuge is the only termite bait to go live in the ground from day one, combining a highly palatable bait matrix with a proven active ingredient. Unlike other baiting products Subterfuge, with its active ingredient hydramethylnon, begins to control termite infestations within days – and sometimes just hours after the bait is installed. $209.25

Termite baiting employs a very different approach. With baits, small amounts of material are deployed like edible "smart missiles" to knock out populations of termites foraging in and around the structure. Foraging termites consume the bait and share it with their nestmates, resulting in a gradual decline in termite numbers. Some baits may even eradicate entire termite colonies. A comprehensive baiting program then seeks to maintain a termite-free condition on the customer's property through ongoing inspection, monitoring and re-baiting as needed.

Installation Below Ground

Most termite bait components (paper, cardboard, etc.) decompose rapidly under ground. Consequently, most installations initially utilize untreated wood in the stations. Once termites are detected in the wooden monitors, the bait material is added. Termites cannot see or smell the baits underground; they more or less wander into them during their persistent foraging activities. To increase the odds of discovery, the stations are installed at fixed intervals (typically 10 to 20 feet apart) around the entire outside perimeter of the building and in known or suspected areas of termite activity (e.g., around woodpiles, stumps, moist areas, and adjacent to previous termite damage). With patience and a little luck, the termites eventually find and feed on one or more of the bait installations.

Termite control. Not termite detection.

Subterfuge® termite bait takes the concept of controlling termites with a baiting system to a whole new level. Subterfuge combines a highly palatable bait matrix with a proven active ingredient, then deploys this full strength combination from day one—giving you a several-week head start on gaining control when compared to other termite baits on the market.

Subterfuge is the ONLY termite bait to go live in the ground from day one. Unlike competitors, Subterfuge doesn't give termites months to feed on your customers' homes before you even detect activity. For the first several weeks with other termite baits, you're just placing wooden stakes in the bait stations to detect the presence of termites. With Subterfuge, however, you begin to gain control over infestations within days—sometimes just hours—after you install the bait in your customer's yard.

Subterfuge recruits termites to death.
The bait matrix used in Subterfuge® termite bait is the product of years of rigorous research. The result is a bait that termites just can't resist - and which they can't wait to share with the rest of their colony. That means once termites discover a bait station filled with Subterfuge, the active ingredient is rapidly distributed throughout the colony to put a quick stop to infestation pressure.

The proven power of hydramethylnon.
Once the great-tasting bait used in Subterfuge begins to recruit termites, the highly effective active ingredient hydramethylnon goes to work. With years of proven success in the pest control industry behind it, hydramethylnon is a trusted performer. Hydramethylnon is slow-acting so that termites have time to return to their colony and distribute the bait. But once hydramethylnon begins to work, termites don't escape their fate. Subterfuge has been proven effective against all major subterranean termite species.

 Termite Prevention Tips

When it comes to gaining access to your home, termites are amazingly proficient. The last thing you want to do is make their job easier. Fortunately, the steps below will help you prevent termites from becoming a problem in the first place, or help keep them from coming back after a Termidor Certified Professional has gotten rid of them for you.

Trim all shrubs, bushes and other dense greenery away from the foundation of your home. Move mulch away from the foundation as well.
Don't leave firewood near your home, it's a magnet for termites. If you do keep firewood outside your house during the winter, keep it raised off the ground.
Remove all lumber, tree stumps and other kinds of loose wood from the perimeter of your home.
Fix any leaky pipes and eliminate any standing water near your home. Termites cannot live on wood alone.
Keep gutters and downspouts free of accumulated leaves and debris. Clogs and obstructions can attract termites.
Seal all cracks and hole in your homes foundation, which may provide a handy access point for termites.

Q: How does Subterfuge work?
A: All successful baits share similar traits; they must be highly effective, nonrepellent and offer the insect a more palatable food source. Subterfuge easily exceeds these demands by combining one of the industry's most widely-used active ingredients (hydramethylnon) with a bait matrix that is proven to be a preferred food source. The slow "delayed action" mortality of it's active ingredient and it's high value as a food source allows for rapid discovery, active recruitment of other colony members and ample time to disperse the toxicant through the colony before death. On the cellular level, Subterfuge is considered to be an "energy uncoupler," disrupting the insect's ability to transfer energy.

Q: What's the advantage of bait going in the ground live from day one?
A: Simply put, it's termite control vs. termite detection. You begin controlling termites from the moment they start feeding. With other termite baiting systems, you install wooden stakes in the bait stations until you get a "hit." Only then do you put bait in the stations. By that time, you've given termites weeks, or even months, of additional time to feed on your customer's house.

Q: Is Subterfuge difficult to maintain?
A: With Subterfuge, you'll actually spend a lot less time inspecting bait stations than you would with other baiting systems. Subterfuge requires an initial inspection one month after installation and then just quarterly inspections thereafter. That's likely to reduce your back and forth time by at least two to four visits per customer in the first year alone — and time saved adds up to money saved.

Termite Reproductives:

Wings are paddle shaped and are twice the length of the body

Antennae are straight and fairly short

Body has only two components: head and (ribbed) abdomen as one continuous piece

Ant Reproductives:

Wings are somewhat pointed and only slightly longer than the length of the body

Antennae are curved

Body has three distinct components: head, thorax (mid-section) and abdomen

Termite Biology and Habits

In Ohio and in most other parts of the United States, subterranean termites are the most common type of termites that infest homes. These termites need moisture to survive. They are closely associated with the soil, where they typically construct an underground nest or a series of interconnected nests, hence the name "subterranean termites." The termites excavate narrow tunnels through the soil, creating a network through which they can travel very long distances (hundreds of feet or more) to reach food. They also transport soil above ground to construct mud tubes (shelter tubes) and to line their feeding galleries in wood. Soil serves as a source of moisture that helps protect termites from the drying effects of air. It also shields termites from predators (ants, birds, lizards, etc.) that feed on them.

Cellulose (especially wood) is the main food source for subterranean termites. In nature, termites feed on dead wood, including roots and stumps. Around homes, termites readily feed on wood mulch used in landscaping. However, any type of mulch provides termites with needed moisture and protection from the elements. In homes, termites often first attack wood that is located close to the soil (i.e., lower parts of the house). They then can follow the framework of the house to gain access to upper levels and floors. As they feed, they excavate galleries in the wood. Termites also can tunnel through inedible materials such as foam insulation, plaster board, etc. as they search for food.
